Our Guide to Natural Foundation

Did you know that natural and organic foundation can provide many benefits for your skin? Are you looking to create a perfect base for your make up look? Read on to discover the advantages of different types of natural foundation options!

Like most makeup products, or any skin product for that matter, I don't believe there is a 'one size fits all'. Just because a foundation agrees with your friend's skin or seems like a good match on the product container, doesn’t mean it’s going to be suitable for you!

Zuii Organic Liquid Foundation

I think it's important to choose a foundation that balances the needs of your skin type as well as provide the nourishment you skin deserves. However, some foundations work better at addressing specific skin conditions than others, for example helping to correct skin concerns such as oily or dry skin and the type of makeup look you may be looking to achieve.

Below is a quick guide to the most common types of foundations to help you can find the best match for your skin!

Natural Liquid Foundations

The good:

  • Helps you create that flawless 'natural' look with light to medium coverage.
  • Light, easy to blend; buildable coverage.
  • Generally non-greasy and best for keeping skin hydrated.
  • Satin or satin-matte formulas are ideal for normal to dry skin and generally are a safe choice for covering blemish prone skin.
  • Matte versions are also good for controlling excess oily shine.
  • Some are available in slight sheen for a healthy skin glow.

The not so good:

  • The oils can make oily skin types greasier, however if you use dusting powder on top such as Ere Perez Translucent Powder, this will help reduce shine.

Mineral Loose-Powder Foundations

The good:

  •  Quick and easy way to apply for a smooth finish for normal to semi-oily or semi dry skin.
  •  Some powder foundations provide subtle luminescence for a soft glow.
  •  Lightweight feel but can be buildable.
  •  Can be used dry or wet or extra coverage.
  •  Great for use over a daytime moisturiser such as a BB cream with SPF sun protection to minimise the shiny texture of some sunscreens.
  •  Generally economical - only a small amount is required for application and lasts a while (depends on use).

The not so good:

  •  Not the best for very oily skin, as the powder can appear clumpy or build up in pores. However La Mav Mattifying Powder can help address this!
  •  Building coverage can look cakey but if not blended well. Apply with a Kabuki brush like La Mav Kabuki brush to help even out powder rather than use a sponge.
  •  Can be messy to apply.

Pressed-Powder Foundations

The good:

  •  Provides coverage and may have anti-aging ingredients that are suitable for all skin types.
  •  Pressed-powder formulas are convenient, travel friendly and good for on-the-go touch ups.
  •  Some can offer anti-aging benefits like Zuii Organic Flora Ultra Powder Foundation by helping to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  •  Provides a smooth silk feel with full coverage with multi-tasking properties.
  •  Can complement an anti-aging skincare routine for better results.

The not so good:

  •  Cost wise, can be pricier than the other foundation types - however if you are looking for a high performing and all in one foundation, this option may be the best.

BB Creams and Tinted Moisturisers

The good

  •  Very good blending properties -easier to match skin tone.
  •  May have some sun protection, light to medium coverage, and hydration in one product.
  •  Excellent if the formula contains skin replenishing ingredients like Andalou Naturals All in one BB cream
  •  Suitable for everyday and best for day time wear.

The not so good:

  •  Coverage can be too light/sheer to hide imperfections, however use with a Concealer such as La Mav Bio Active Concealer to address this.

Cream and Stick Foundations

The good:

  •  Medium to full coverage to hide imperfections.
  •  Convenient and works well for on-the-go touch ups
  •  Multitask makeup - some can be used like a concealer/bronzer over a BB cream or tinted moisturiser.
  •  Stick version is good for smaller areas like highlighting brow bone.
  •  Cream pot formula such as Lavera Natural Mousse makeup is great for oily and combination skin!

The not so good:

  •  Can be difficult to blend over large areas and best to apply with fingers due to heavier texture.
  •  Some stick foundations have a thick texture that appears cakey and can lead to breakouts and clogged pores.
